Research discovers six new genes linked to diabetes in South Asians (From Asian Image): "An international study of almost 60,000 South Asian people has discovered six new genes linked to type 2 diabetes.

The research, which was part-funded by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) provides an insight into the genetic causes of type 2 diabetes in the South Asian population.

The scientists, based at universities in the UK and many South Asian countries, studied the genetic codes of nearly 60,000 South Asian people.

This was the first study of its kind to investigate the genetics underlying the condition in this group. About a third of them had type 2 diabetes and the rest were healthy.

This research highlights six new genes linked to the condition that South Asian people could potentially carry in their DNA"
